Propaganda Poster
I originally could not decide on a theme so I made quite a few different projects. I decided to go with a more literal portrayal of the theme, Survival of the Fittest. My project is about man vs. nature and even machine. When I searched the internet looking for the picture I originally was going to just combine a few images until I saw the main picture I used, it seemed to fit perfectly. I only adjusted needed to adjust the brightness and contrast to make the picture darker so it would better fit the idea of project. I decided to use mostly reds, yellows and dark grey/black not only because they matched the “survival of the fittest” text ad back ground but also because the red banners grab your attention and red and black are usually colors used when you talk about war and fighting. The “kill them before them before they kill you” is the statement I used on another one of my projects that I decided not to use. I wanted to be very direct and literal in this project rather than to have a somewhat abstract image that would make you think more like I would normally do. When I showed a couple other people just to see what they thought they said it reminded them of the movie Jurassic Park or that it looked like the poster for a movie.
When I first started this project I was thinking about the original evolutionary meaning of survival of the fittest, but when I look at my project I think it could relate to the past, present or even future. There has always been a somewhat “war” between humans and nature over the land and to me, my poster seems like it portrays just that. Overall, I like my image for the most part and I believe it fits well with the theme of the class and exhibition.
